Warne to be sent home

shane.jpg (13624 bytes)JOHANNESBURG, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Australia will send Shane Warne home from the World Cup after the player failed a drugs test, an informed source told Reuters on Tuesday.

The source said Warne had tested positive for a diuretic — a drug often used to help weight loss or as a masking agent for other drugs.

He said the test had been carried out by the Australian Cricket Board. It was unclear when the test was done, or whether it was a routine procedure or specifically for the World Cup.

Australia team officials declined to confirm or deny the news but said a news conference with Warne would be held at 0700 GMT — just one hour before the start of Australia’s first match of their World Cup defence against Pakistan.

Warne has been on a fitness regime since the start of 2002 and has lost around 13 kilogrammes.
